Luke 4:1-13 The Word Defeats the Devil
The devil knows how to tempt us, but the Word of God refutes every
attack.
Jesus had been baptized and anointed with power for ministry by the
Holy Spirit. He was led into the desert for 40 days without food.
The devil tempted Him (see Luke 4:1-13): “Turn these stones into
bread.” “Bow down and worship me [the devil] and I will give you the
kingdoms of the world.” “Throw yourself off of the temple and the
angels will bear you up.”
Why not? Turnings stones into bread means riches. Ruling kingdoms
is power. Surviving a great fall makes for fame.
Worldly riches, power and fame tempt us, don’t they? People make
plans to get them and often as not, fall off the ladder. They become
self-centered. They ignore Christ and His Word, the source of
strength and salvation.
Jesus combated the devil with the Word: “Man does not live by bread
alone.” “You shall worship the Lord your God, and him only shall you
serve.” “You shall not put the Lord your God to the test.” The Word
provides the wisdom and strength to deal with temptations and to
defeat the adversary’s attacks.
Therefore, hear the Word and seek its strength. The Word defeats the
devil and forgives our sins. Amen.
