Luke 5:1-11 Fish with Jesus
I read news accounts where people go fishing in the bay alone. The
boats do not return. The fishermen have drowned. I pray that they
knew Jesus.
Jesus loves to fish. Simon Peter and his business partners, James
and John, the “Sons of Thunder,” fished all day but caught nothing
(Luke 5:1-11 ESV). Jesus told Peter, "Put out into the deep and let
down your nets for a catch." You can imagine an experienced
fisherman’s thoughts when a supposed novice tells you what to do.
But, Peter had heard Jesus preach and agreed to do it. The catch of
fish was so large that the nets were breaking. They were astonished
and Peter fell to his knees as said, "Depart from me, for I am a
sinful man, O Lord."
We think we know how things work, but Jesus created all things. In
the presence of Jesus Christ, we realize how unworthy and sinful we
are. But, Jesus does not push us away. He cleanses us. If we like
fishing, He invites us to work on His boat.
Jesus is the best fisherman of all time. He astonishes even the most
experienced. If Jesus fishes with you there will be no lack of fish.
He knows where they are, what they like, and if there are not enough
of them, He can make more.
Jesus gives us purpose in fishing: And Jesus said to Simon, "Do not
be afraid; from now on you will be catching men." And when they had
brought their boats to land, they left everything and followed him.
Help Jesus catch people with the Gospel of forgiveness.
Jesus keeps you safe, no matter how high the waves. And one day, you
will not come back, but He will take you with Him to heaven. Always
fish with Jesus. Amen.
